Swami vivekananda was born in a well-known data family that lived in the Simla section of kolkata ( then Calcutta ). Sri Viswanathan Datta was a lawyer and a learned man whom everyone respected. His wife, Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a stately lady and very well respected too. Their first son was born on the 12th of January 1863. They named him Narendra nath who grew up to be the world renowned swami vivekananda.

Naren was a naughty  child and his mother often had a tough time handling him. Sometimes, Naren grew extremely restless. That's when she would pour cold water on his head and  chant the name of lord shiva in his ear to calm him down. In fact, it was the only way to control him,. Younger Naren learned many things from his mother and loved to hear Mahabharata and Ramayana stories from her. He would enjoy hearing the story of Sri Rama immensely. He would enjoy hearing the story of Sri Rama immensely. He had also bought a small clay idol of Sita-Rama that he worshipped with flowers everyday. He liked to listed to the Ramayan any time.            Naren also liked to play at meditation. He would take a couple of his friends to a lonely place and sit in  front of an images of Sita-Rama or Shiva. Then he would meditate for a long time, without seeing  or feeling anything around him. Once a cobra came gliding along to where they were playing.. While the other boys ran away on seeing the snake, Naren stayed put... They shouted for him to come away but he did not hear them. After some time, the snake went away on its own . Later when his parents asked Naren why he did not run away from the snake, he told them that he was in such a happy state, he knew nothing about the snake coming or where he and his friends were.
Naren was always happy when Sadhus ( sages ) visited their house. He something gave away even valuable things to them. Once he gave away a piece of new clothing that he was wearing to a Sadhu. After that, his parents locked him up whenever the Sadhus came visiting. So Naren started to throw things through the window when he would see a Sadhu. He used to say that he himself would become a Sadhu one day.

Since Naren's father was a lawyer, many people came to consult him. He usually offered them tobacco to smoke. There were different pipes for different castes. But the whole caste system was a great mystery to Naren. He did not understand why a member of one caste was not allowed to eat with members of other castes. Why were there different tobacco pipes for different castes? What would happen if he smoked from all the pipes? Would there be an explosion or would the roof fall down? Naren decided to find out for himself. He took a whiff from one pipe. Nothing happened. He tried all the pipes in turn and still nothing happened. Just then his father walked into the room and asked him what he was doing. Naren explained that he was trying to see what would happen if he broken caste. His father laughed and went into his study.
